Burton Congregational Church

United Church of Christ

Learning
Faith That Seeks Understanding

Why: A vital aspect of what it means to be an active, growing christian is continually learning the story of our faith and its impact on our lives and the life of the world.

Who: Everyone, from toddler-age to elder-age.

When: Educational opportunities are offered every Sunday, September through June. Adults meet for their class at 9:00 AM. Children of all ages are welcome to attend the pre-worship experience beginning at 9:15, or attend Kids’ Church at 10:30 AM; then re-joining their parents in worship at 11:15.

How & What: Burton Congregational Church thrives on a curriculum based on the Common Lectionary. What this means that, on any given Sunday, the scripture passages being taught in the Sunday School classrooms are the same as those which are the focus of that day's worship. The bottom line is that parents and children encounter the same words from God's Word, and thus be offered the opportunity to continue their conversation and learning from God's Word together, even after they've "left the building" and gone out from the church to live their everyday lives. Is this important to us? Yes. Is this important to you?  Well?.......

We'll be looking for you to show up one of these old days. The Sunday School resumes its regular schedule on the second Sunday of September. The theme revealed to us in the appointed scriptures for this coming season might appear in a CNN headline like this: "Real World/Real Faith"  (As if to say:  "How do we take these so-called Holy Words to heart and make them part of our everyday life??)

Weekday Preschool is available for children 3-5 years.

Basic rules for Bible study: Take it seriously, but not necessarily literally. Regarding the study of any particular passage of Holy Scripture, we try to answer these questions: Who wrote it? When? Why? (What was the situation or context surrounding its writing.) For whom was it originally written? What did it mean to the original readers? (What was their situation/context?) What does it mean for us today? What does it mean for me personally?
